As
humans we all go through the process of growing up to become successful at
something we aspire with great desire, independently. One of the phases of this
development is puberty and adolescence where we find ourselves in the middle of
leaving our childhood innocence behind in order to become self sufficient and
authentic adults. This segment of life in humanity, and in general, identifies
our true beings by how we tend to react to obstacles, and finding ways to solve
them. While trying to figure out the way out of problems presented on the
course of our life, we find ourselves depending upon our backgrounds, our
pasts, our social communities, our beliefs, our families, and our set goals to
make the decisions according to our points of view, and depending on each
circumstance. As a personal experience, I can say that being young, in my
environment, in particular, is a challenge for most of us who are willing to
take the risk of over passing all boundaries crossing our paths to become what
we want, and accomplish great things with limited resources.
The
education offered in the society I live in focuses on providing youth with a
general understanding of an adult life, and how to make this future suitable to
the needs each of us has as well as the things we want. This is why I consider
our education tough, and also because it’s a way of saying that we, the
preceding generations, should follow certain criteria in order to have a
successful future, but only "successful” in the eyes of adults. This is a
process repeated though out times where knowledge is delivered instead of
learned. There is also the pressure of competing amongst each other to achieve
first place instead of cooperating to construct bigger and more valuable
products. On the other hand, the education that actual generations receive
makes our lives easier if we look at it from a different perspective. My
education in particular, offers a place where we not only have to perform
academic tasks, but have fun, and express our opinions on different
circumstances. This mix of activities encloses the characteristics that a human
being should have in order to be recognized when we work with tenacity, and
give our personal best.
Family
is one of the most important factors that should remain stable during the times
of adolescence of one of the members of the family. Relatives are the only ones
who support the youth today. Today’s youth is characterized by having
everything, but boundaries, and gratefulness for their parent’s hard work. On
the other hand, most parents show minimum commitment that a young adult should
receive. This causes society to get out of balance since young people grow up
to be a group of unprepared and disrespectful people where sons and daughters
don’t follow instructions, and parents are most of the time not there to be
role models for them either. In the new generations, there’s also a loss of
family values for this reason too, where parents are more aware of what their
children wear than their internal beings. Shifting point of view, there are
also a vast majority of families that keep traditions, and adapt to the new
century, as well.These families, like
mine, are well-formed homes where parents still have authority, and care for
their children. The way homes are managed is one of the most important factors
that determine one’s future because this is where you receive the basis of your
personality and way of being, but most importantly you learn how to love and
care for others.
The social
life of a young person is crucial since this is where we prove the strength of
our values, and learns how to interact with others. In this society where I
grew up, for example, alcohol is great problem for youth. It is considered a
beverage to have fun, and get loose. People start drinking when they become
twelve, and think that getting drunk is the only way to enjoy a party. This
happens because of peer pressure with the group of friends we create. This is
why, socially in this case, being young is pretty hard because you worry about
being part of a group, and not being left out but in the process we lose our
integrity when we accept social rules that become part of our lives later on,
such as drugs. Few are the people who stand up for what they believe to protect
themselves; many others who aren’t strong enough to say no. Looking at my
generation from the bright side, I can say that all of us have grown in an
environment of freedom that enabled us to become free thinkers, tolerant, and
open minded.
As for
the national problems of youth, I can say that the greater one is inequality of
opportunities. Eighty percent of my population has little or no resources to
become successful, and the other ten percent obtains the needed resources to
keep on being successful, and remain on top of the economical pyramid. Public
education offered is of low quality due to the fact that constructing knowledge
is no a priority for governors because they may get more votes from people who
are less educated. This creates a higher rate of ignorance and youth does not
help the country progress, as it should.
In the end, based on my experience as one, I
find myself entitled to say that youth is a complex phase of humanity, as all
are, but this is when we define our identities and polish our personalities. We
are in the midst of making important decisions, and guiding our paths to
success in areas such as emotional, economical, and career wise. The key point for this is it to keep a balance
between them, so we don’t get absorbed by one exclusively. Youth is a time to
enjoy, and we should take advantage by building satisfactory memories of this
time, but we need to take into account that everything we do affects others in
a negative or positive way. I invite the current youth of the world to take a
moment and think about ways to make young adults be more productive than
conflictive, so we can progress with the passing of each generations, and move
forward to a sensitive, conscious and united societies.
I liked the style of presentment, now I really have a picture of the youth of Ecuador and I see a great difference with my country. But, frankly speaking, I expected to see the attitude to contemporary youth not only in Ecuador but may be to a real world situation. Nevertheless, thanks, it was very pleasant to read.
